QAAFA and Freethinkers of WWU are cosponsoring a Transgender 101 talk this Thurs (the 17th) from 7-9 pm in Bond Hall 109. The talk will be given by the founders of Bellingham's Center for Gender Sanity Janis Walworth (educator on transgender issues) and Michele Kammerer (a transgender woman). It will discuss topics such as the difference between sex and gender, gender expression and gender identity, what's involved in transitioning, etc. There will also be a short Q&A at the end. I encourage everyone to attend! You can find more info on the Facebook event page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=249714555077557

Event: Spirit Day this Thurs!

Hello everyone! We apologize for sending two e-mails this week, but we have an important event we wanted to make you aware of: Spirit Day is this Thurs (the 20th)! Please wear purple on Thurs to show your support! If you don't know what spirit day is I put a description below. Also, QAAFA will be handing out strips of purple fabric on Thursday that you can tie around your arm or put on your backpack to show your support. We'll be in Red Square from 9am-2:00pm on Thurs (or as long as supplies last). Come say hi and take a purple band!

Thanks!

SPIRIT DAY:
Millions of Americans wear purple on Spirit Day (THIS THURSDAY) as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and to speak out against bullying. Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually on October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. Getting involved is easy -- participants are asked to simply "go purple" on October 20 as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are.

QAAFA Meeting 4: Queer Issues and Voting

Hello Everyone!!

Meeting #4 is here! Tomorrow, from 4 to 6 in Viking Union 462A, we will be discussing Queer Issues and Voting. What do you look for in a candidate and why is this important?

In addition, we will be talking about the upcoming Mayoral Debates on campus this Thursday from 5 to 7 on the PAC Main Stage. The link below will get you started on learning a bit more about your candidates.

Also, don't forget to bring your planners! We will be starting to plan events and we want as many people involved as possible and if you have any ideas, we'd love to hear them!

And to anyone who missed last week's meeting, we were successful in deciding on a t-shirt design. Across the front will be the words "Love Sees No Gender" and the back right of the shirt will have our QAAFA logo. The two color options will be green and purple.

We hope to see you all there!

I'm hoping you will sign-on to the letter demanding the release of Edson Cosmas (see below) and attend the rally and press conference in San Francisco this Tuesday. The timeline is very tight, as Eddy is currently to be deported to Tanzania on Friday -- a virtual death sentence, given the anti-gay regime.

Please let me know ASAP.

Free Edson Cosmas Now!
Picket the SF British Counsulate
Tuesday, May 24th - 4:00 PM

We call on the UK Home Office to release Edson "Eddy" Cosmas from
detention immediately! As a gay Tanzanian activist, Eddy has been a
fighter for freedom, justice, immigrant and LGBTI rights and democracy
in Britain and internationally. Eddy is in Britain to escape
imprisonment, Tanzania's anti-gay laws, assault, torture or murder at
the hands of the police or anti-gay mobs. He was known to be gay in
Tanzania, where homosexuality is illegal and carries prison sentences
of 25 years, and gay and lesbian activists are targeted for arrest. He
has been attacked, beaten and denounced in Tanzania because of his
sexuality – a typical experience for LGBTI people who are "out".

Eddy's detention is part of an anti-gay and racist policy of the Home
Office aimed at circumventing the UK Supreme Court decision that
requires the Home Office to treat gay rights activists as political
leaders, no different from any other refugee fighting for democracy
and basic human rights. Openly gay activists like Eddy who should be
granted asylum without question, are now being "fast-tracked", held in
detention with no right to secure a lawyer of their choice and set up
for a series of hastily scheduled sham hearings that are certain to
result in quick deportations. The level of the UK Home Office's
blatant racist and anti-gay disregard for gay refugee political
leaders who deserve
to be treated as heroes is shocking and
unacceptable.

Join us on Tuesday, May 24th to picket the British Consulate to demand the release of Edson Cosmas from detention immediately in solidarity with U.K. supporters' demonstration at the British Home Office.

04/12/11 meeting

To the peeps on this mailing list,

There is no snazy subject because its late and I am not sure when you all are going to read this and I don't want you to get confused by me saying tomorrow or something like that. SO here is the plan...ya ready?

We shall be debriefing the first day of the Gender Neutral Bathroom event to see if there is anything we can improve on for the next two days and to see how it went. But our main topic will be...Day of Silence!!! For those of you who don't know what DOS is, its a day where people take a vow of silence to represent the discrimination through silencing minorities, with the focus primarily on the the Queer community, face on a daily basis. This spectacular representation happens this Friday 4/15/2011!! Be prepared to discuss what, if anything, you all would like to do for this special day. Bellow is the link to the card people will be carrying around on Friday to explain to people what they are doing with out talking. Come to the meeting to find out more about it.

DOS link:http://www.dayofsilence.org/content/getorganized.html (the link for the actual PDF is on the page under speaking cards)

Can't wait to see you all at the meeting,

Tomorrows meeting ;)

Hello QAAFAers!

Tomorrow is our last meeting on the quarter! Its so sad to see this quarter end becuase of all the growth that QAAFA has done, but I know everyone is excited to be on break. Come to the meeting tomorrow for a fun, relaxed time. We will be discussing some business about Chick-fil-A and how that event went on Friday, but other than that this meeting is a pretty low key one.

To go along with the low key theme...I hope you enjoy this as much as I do!

See you all tomorrow,
Briana
Co-events coordinator

You are all amazing and beautiful people, remember that when times get hard. QAAFA LOVES YOU!

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Today's Meeting :)

Hello all you beautiful people,

Today we are focusing on Chik-fil-a and taking a stance against them by educating people that Chik-fil-a not only dislikes Queers, but discriminates against all types of people. We want people to know that this is not okay and as a community here at Western, we should not stand for this. There is a rumor going around that if we want to have a say in what happens with Chik-fil-a on campus that this is the week to do it, so today we will be talking about a way to best do that. The ex. board has come up with a few ideas, but we need your help, ideas, and commitment in order to make anything happen, so come prepared to do what this club is meant to do...activism!

We will also be talking about how we can continue our activism into next quarter. We know that this quarter has been more hands off in this department, but that is because it is difficult due to the weather. Spring quarter we are going to amp it up, so think of some ideas of what you want to educate people on and how we want to make our opinions heard.

Here are a few articles to get your mind thinking about Chik-fil-A and why they need to be off our campus for good!

These are just a few things to think about,
Briana

P.S. Dont forget about the drag show this FRIDAY in the PAC concert hall at 7pm ! Tickets are only $10 and its a super fun time :)

Tomorrow's meeting!

Hey errbody!

Tomorrow, February 22, QAAFA will be discussing and playing games associated with Privilege. It's going to be another interactive meeting so be prepared to have some fun and to have your mind expanded.

Same time and same place :)

Also, the LGBTA is putting on a Drag workshop tomorrow 7-9 pm in VU462, you all should stop by and check it out, it promises to be a gay ole time :) haha Im funny!

Just something to chew on...

See you all tomorrow!

Valentines Day Event

Hi everyone. Okay, so I need volunteers for Monday to pass out our Valentine's Day slips. They say "you are loved" and "all love is beautiful" and will have a yummy chocolate attached. We'll be handing them out from 10-2 (or as long as they last!). Also, we need help putting them together (i.e. attaching the chocolate to the paper slip). It will be super easy if a lot of people help, and will be a nice time for us to just chill and hang out together. We will be putting them together tomorrow (Sunday) at Brent's house: 2401 Taylor Ave Apt# 304. This is just off of south campus. We're meeting there at 4:30 and we might watch a queer movie or something while we're making them. Text/call me if you can volunteer for making them, passing them out Monday, or both!

Upcoming Meeting!

Hello QAAFA people,

Tomorrow (February 8th) is the meeting of the quarter to look forward to the most!

This quarter, like many of you already know, is focused on self-esteem. Tomorrows meeting is game oriented with discussion to follow. Its the meeting we have been working up to for the majority of the quarter. It is designed to push your comfort zones slightly and challenge each and everyone of you to be honest with yourself. These games have the best impact with lots of people so we are encouraging EVERYONE to come, even if you have yet to be to a meeting this quarter or at all.

On a side note here are two articles about Queer related issues in the media. I hope you are enthralled by them like I was.

I hope you all have a wonderful day and I hope to see you in VU 462B at 4pm!

Long time no talk!

Hey everyone!

I know it has been a long time since we sent out an email, but I am taking it over so it will be more regular, I promise :) I hope everyone's break went well and that this quarter isn't stressing you all out too much.

QAAFA has been having a really good quarter thus far. Our topic is Self-esteem and why its important, especially to the Queer community.  We have been doing everything from talking about what makes us feel loved to making lists about things/people in our lives. Tomorrow's meeting, we will focus on what you want out of the club/what you want to talk about and end with a game pertaining to making ourselves feel good.

Also, next week QAAFA is tabling Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday with coffee and tea to just let everyone at Western know that we are here and want as many people to attend who have a desire to make a difference and meet great people. We aren't doing it this week because vendor row booked up before we were abel to snag a table.

Just a reminder, we meet every Tuesday 4-6 in VU462 B. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Sincerely,
Briana
Co-events Coordinator for QAAFA
