IMPORTANT: Club closure/restructuring

Hello lovely people!

Unfortunately, due to low attendance and a lack of people who are interested in activism Queer and Allies for Activism will be discontinuing meetings for the foreseeable and beginning the process of cancelling the club as an AS club.

However, since the people who have been attending are still interested in meeting we will instead be having weekly discussion group meetings that aren't part of any official WWU club. We'll be meeting Thursdays in the BT Lounge at 8:00 pm. Mostly we'll be talking about different issues that affect the queer community and how we all feel about those issues, giving particular attention to how they affect minorities within the queer community.  We will also occasionally just be hanging out watching queer movies, etc. and working on building a stronger queer community.

Anyone is welcome! We're all friendly I promise. =) If you're interested in continuing to know about those discussion group meetings you should reply to this and let me know because QAAFA as a club will no longer be sending out weekly e-mails. We will however be keep our Facebook page up and running which can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/qaafa

Hope you are all off to a great start for spring quarter!

First meeting tomorrow!

Hello!

Tomorrow (Tues) is our first meeting of Spring Quarter! Meeting starts at 4 pm and we'll meet at VU 462B (though we might have to move rooms, but everyone meet up there).

We will be doing an activity that looks at how we use our different identities to define ourselves, as well as having a conversation about the HRC's red equal sign campaign and the positive and negative affects it has on the queer community. Should be an interesting meeting!

See you all tomorrow!

Meeting Tomorrow: Being Silenced

Hello everyone!

Don't forget about our meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) from 4-5:30 pm in VU 462B. We will be talking about how minority communities get silenced, how being silenced affects us, and what we can do to work towards minority communities not being silence. We will also be planning our next event, so come with ideas!

See you all tomorrow!

Volunteers Needed for Homeless Youth Event!

Hello everyone!

Queers and Allies for Activism (QAAFA) is looking for volunteers for our next event! We are putting on an event about queer homeless youth, and homeless youth in general, and we need some extra people to make the event successful. Essentially there will be two parts. The part we need help with the most takes place in Red Square. We would like people on 2/11/13 and 2/12/13 to be in Red Square dressed in a manner that would give others the impression you are homeless. You would be holding cardboard signs with statistics on them about homeless youth (for example, a shocking 62% of queer homeless youth commit suicide) and directing people to the second part of the event which will be a table in Vendors Row (2/11/13-2/15/13). The table will have information on homeless youth and we will be collecting clothing, food, and money to donate to Northwest Youth Services. If you would like to volunteer to be at the table we're asking that you come to our weekly meeting either this week or next so you are informed enough to table (1/29/13 or 2/5/13 from 4-5:30 pm in VU 462B).

We will also have donation bins around campus the following week. The number of homeless youth is this country, and in our own community, is shocking and it is a serious problem, especially among queer youth and youth who are people of color. Please help us educate people on this issue and provide food/clothing/money to youth in need.

If you are willing to volunteer please reply with your full name and which part you would like to volunteer for. Once we have a list of volunteers I will send out an e-mail with times to sign up for. If you aren't able to volunteer feel free to pass this message along to any friends who might be interested.

Thanks everyone! We really want to make this a great event!

Hello everyone!

Just a reminder that our meeting is today from 4-6 pm in VU 462B. If you were at the last meeting (or if you weren't but you have a little extra time today) don't forget to bring in one topic that you are interested in and have a basic understanding of.

We will be discussing everyone's topic and picking one or two that the club would like to do an event on. Hopefully we'll begin the planning process for that event today! =)

See you soon!
